Item Description
Lapis lazuli is a relatively rare semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense blue color. Lapis takes an excellent polish and can be made into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics, ornaments, and vases. In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and ornaments such as scarabs. Powdered lapis was used as eyeshadow by Cleopatra. It was also used in ancient Mesopotamia by the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. We are offering a carving of two starfish by artist Rodin Lee. The piece measures 4.75x5" tall overall and depicts two textured starfish on a carved seashell base. While it may appear that the starfish were carved separately and attached, this is not the case, as Lee has carved from a solid block, the lapis adding to the piece's visual appeal as its natural vivid blue color adds to the appearance of starfish against the seashell base. Lee is known for his sculptures utilizing this effect. In addition, this piece has had a hole drilled on the underside and fits onto a rod in a custom fit base of peach-colored calcite crystals. Overall height is 5.75" tall. Exc. Wonderful display w/great colors.
