Item Description
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral that is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown. Banded rhodochrosite is mined in Capillitas, Argentina, which is where this example was obtained from. Cut cross-sections reveal concentric bands of lt. and dark rose colored layers. Its main use is as an ore of manganese which is a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain aluminium alloys. Quality banded specimens are often used for decorative stones and jewelry. The Incas believed that rhodochrosite was the blood of their former rulers, turned to stone, therefore it is sometimes called "Rosa del Inca" or "Inca Rose." We are offering a 4.75x6.5" slice of rhodochrosite w/some foreign interior content encircled by pale brown rings that are in turn surrounded w/rings of rosy pink-colored rhodochrosite. Both sides have been polished for display, and slice comes w/a clear plastic base to allow upright display. Lovely rose coloring. Exc. This rich red example was mined about 20 years ago and is no longer available and only available from old collections.
