Auction #208 - Part II
Item numbers 1278 through 3040 in auction 208
Item Description
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral that is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown. Banded rhodochrosite is mined in Capillitas, Argentina, which is where this example was obtained from. Cut cross-sections reveal concentric bands of lt. and dark rose colored layers. Its main use is as an ore of manganese which is a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain aluminum alloys. Quality banded specimens are often used for decorative stones and jewelry. The Incas believed that rhodochrosite was the blood of their former rulers, turned to stone, therefore it is sometimes called "Rosa del Inca" or "Inca Rose." We are offering a 3x3-3/8" slice of rhodochrosite including an entire ring formation and a banded portion along one side, w/rosy pink-colored rings. Both sides have been polished for display. Lovely rose coloring. Exc.
