Item Description
"The Story Of Little Black Sambo" is a children's book written/illustrated by Helen Bannerman, and first published in Oct., 1899. Sambo is a South Indian boy who encounters four hungry tigers, and surrenders his colorful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella so they will not eat him. The tigers are vain and each thinks he is better dressed than the others. They chase each other around a tree until they are reduced to a pool of melted butter. Sambo then recovers his clothes and his mother makes pancakes from the butter. The story was a children's favorite for decades until the word "sambo" was deemed a racial slur in some countries, and the character is not considered politically correct today. Offered here is a figural ceramic salt and pepper shaker set from c. 1950s that was produced by the Ceramic Arts Studio as marked on undersides. Sambo stands 3.5" tall and tiger is 5" long and 2.75" tall. Exc. A superb set, and very desirable, listed in salt and pepper guides in the $500 value range.
