Item Description
Large 22x28" stiff cardboard poster for June 19, 1953 show at Gregory's Ballroom in Richmond, VA that featured R&B group The Swallows and The All Star Dance Orchestra. Design includes inset photo of the group plus name in large bold letters along w/"King Recording Stars" and lists three song titles "Beside You - Laugh - Bicycle Tillie." The Swallows' recording of "Will You Be Mine" was released in 1951, and is now widely regarded as one of the first major doo-wop hits. "Will You Be Mine" reached a peak position of Number 9 on the Billboard R&B charts. The following year, 1952, the Swallows released "Beside You", which became their second national hit, peaking at Number 10 on Billboard's R&B chart. A small group of these posters were discovered in Richmond being used as insulation in a building and as such, almost all have significant damage and/or restoration. Unlike those, this example is totally complete and original and scarce as such. A series of small holes appear across "Richmond" and "Dance Orchestra" text. Scattered lt. edge/corner tip wear. Poster remains bright and clean and still displays Fine.
