Item Description
2.25x3.5x.75” deep. This 1880 campaign tobacco container features a 1-7/8” disk attached on the inside lid on which four images are printed. Images can be changed by turning the disk on the inside of the lid. Illustration on lid shows a man on either side of oval opening wearing top hat with text above oval opening reading “The Next President.” Very tiny text below oval reads “That Is So/No Sir” indicating the men are discussing who will be the next president. Text also includes “P. Lorillard & Co.” Bottom of tin has illustration w/caption “View Of Factory” and text including “Manufactory No. 10/Jersey City/5th District N.J.” Paint on lid has craze lines showing when viewed closely, but they do not reveal base metal. Underside is not crazed. A few pinpoints of paint off but paint is remarkable 98%-99% complete. Four images are somewhat tan but with a minimum of wear. Hancock and English have no paint loss. Garfield has small spot off his forehead. Arthur has 1/16" paint chip that touches his head on right. A remarkable example of one of the first campaign mechanical items. Hake 2004 Hancock #3011 guide value of $1,800. Very conservative opening.
