Item Description
FDR entered politics in 1910 and won a state senate seat as a Democrat from the heavily Republican area of Duchess Co., New York. Following Wilson’s 1912 presidential victory, he appointed as Sec. of the Navy Josephus Daniels (served 1913-1923) and F.D.R. as Assistant. First item is modern but vintage looking 10.5x12.5” frame with glass over double mat holding a glossy press photo in 6x8.25” opening. Paper sheet on reverse repeats caption on the back of the photo as “4/15/14 Franklin D. Roosevelt Of New York Who Is To Be Assistant Secretary Of The Navy.” About 15 handling hairline creases on the glossy photo from .5” to 2.5” but these show only in reflected light. Tiny white dot on his hat brim and similar on lower coat. Displays Near Mint. Second is unframed 5x7” mat photo with text in image “@ 1919 G.W.S.” Reverse has ink stamp “Photo by G.W. Stephenson” plus Paterson, N.J. address. On a balcony with small “Welcome” sign eight men are shown apparently reviewing troops home from Europe and World War I. Smiling F.D.R. in top hat with General Pershing to the right are clearly shown. A list of names in pencil on the back reads: “March, Roosevelt, P (obviously Pershing), B, Glass, Burleson, Hauston- Agriculture, Admiral Benson.” Three small creases near two corners. Clean.
