Item Description
High quality wood frame 19.75x27.5 with glass and double mat holds rare 13.25x21” c. 1918 thin card stock poster with his illustrated portrait above title “A Message To The Men And Women Of Connecticut.” His message begins with line: “No Chain Is Stronger Than It’s Weakest Link.” And continues with text: “This National Crisis Cannot Be Met With Complete Success Unless Every American Does His Full Share.” In last paragraph, he applauds the state and says “In Washington We Appreciate The Remarkable Record Made By The State Of Connecticut; We Ask You To Keep Up The Good Work With The Help Of Ten Out Of Every Ten Of Your Citizens.” His bold letter name and office read: “FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT/ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF THE NAVY” Poster was “Issued By Connecticut State Council Of Defense” and ends with printers name “Calhoun Show Print Hartford, Conn.” Light tanning on borders, mostly at top. Top right 6” crease with 3” hairline on its surface shows little. Next to his hand is 1” light tan line outlining a spot with one of same size at very lower left blank corner. There is also a little tanning mixed in with the black accent lines over his upper shoulder. Damage is inconsequential compared to the historical significance and rarity of this early FDR poster. Displays beautifully. Mark Furr Collection. One known to us. See previous two related items.
