Item Description
This is DeWitt/Sullivan AL-1864-93 (not illustrated) in 26mm (1-1/16") size. There is a smaller 20mm version which comes uniface as Hake #3075 and also double-sided. This larger 26mm example is one of three known to us. One example was sold by Sotheby's in 1999 from the collection of famed numismatist and 1877 pioneering cataloger of Lincoln campaign items Andrew Zabriskie (1853-1916). The other example, with some damage on the Lincoln side, was titled "Super Rare" and sold by Heritage in May 2012. This third example, recently discovered at the grass-roots level by our consignor, is complete with its double strand 2.5" rose colored cord. The narrow dentellated brass rim has Mint luster. Each ferrotype has the candidate’s name as "A. Lincoln." and "A. Johnson." with two stars before and after the lettering plus a curved panel on the chest area inscribed "1864." Defects are minor. On the Lincoln side there is a 1/8" black hairline on the left background and an under 1/16" black hairline crossing his ear at the left. A few additional pinpoint marks are essentially microscopic. On Johnson a 1/16" flake removed most of the first star. There is a black dot left of the fourth star and there is an under 1/16" flake off the extreme edge at 5 o'clock. Both emulsion surfaces retain a high gloss finish and are totally smooth. This Exc. condition rarity has a modest opening bid.
