Item Description
Also see previous button for General Butler. This button is 7/8" with W&H back paper. Text reads "American Liberty League/The Old Bell Is Still Ringing." This political organization was formed in 1934 by conservative Democrats to oppose FDR's New Deal. It was active for two years but following FDR's land slide re-election in 1936 it greatly reduced it's activities. The executive committee included former Democratic Presidential nominee's John W. Davis and Al Smith. It was also supported by wealthy businessman Irenee du Pont. In 1934 General Butler claimed this group was plotting to overthrow the government and asked him to lead the coup.
