Item Description
2-1/8" tall with vertical bar pin on reverse. Die-cut spread wing eagle on top of the shield with ribbon designs and wreath surrounding the portrait. Inscription below the portrait is "Dare To Do Right." This 19th Century item is likely c. 1870s. Pictured is J. K. Osgood who in January 1872 inaugurated a reform movement of the drinking men in Gardner, Maine. Osgood was a reformed "drunkard" who formed temperance clubs working first in 1873 under the auspices of Massachusetts Temperance Alliance. In these early years he organized about 40 clubs in Massachusetts and then over 100 clubs in New Hampshire. Tiniest trivial loss of some silver luster from his forehead. Condition remains Exc. and this is a very early and very rare badge. Sen. Charles Dick Collection.
