Item numbers 1 through 1277 in auction 208
Item Description
First, a brief bio of this very politically active woman. In 1889 she married J. Borden Harriman, a New York banker and the elder cousin of future New York Governor William Averell Harriman. In 1903 she co-founded the Colony Club, New York City's first club exclusively for women. In 1908 she led efforts by the NYC chapter of the National Woman's Committee to expose harsh working conditions in the city's factories. She was active in the women's suffrage movement and led a parade of suffragists down Fifth Avenue. In 1912 she supported Woodrow Wilson and was elected as the first president of Women's National Wilson and Marshall Association. During WWI she organized the American Red Cross Women's Motor Corps of the District of Columbia, including driving ambulances around D.C., and she directed the Women's Motor Corps in France. She began serving as a member of the Democratic National Committee in 1920 and held the position until the 1950s. Three of the following items relate to that position. She did not support FDR in 1932 and remarked that it caused FDR's inner circle "To Have A Little Gray Mark Against Me." She did become one of his strongest supporters at the 1936 convention and in 1937 was appointed as United State's Minister to Norway. In additional to these four items see #782 a medal badge awarded to her by the George Washington Bi-Centennial Commission. The first of these four items is a brass 1-15/16x3-9/16" card which includes logo of the City of Chicago as well as the 1933 World's Fair. It reads "Democratic National Convention Chicago-June 1932-National Committeeman." Below on a ribbon design is her name "Mrs. J. Borden Harriman." Text below grants courtesy to pass through police lines followed by facsimile signature of Mayor Cermak. Tiny rough spot on one corner tip but still NM. Second item is 5" tall ribbon badge from "1940 Democratic Convention." Enamel and brass with ribbon backing. Panels at top reads "National Committee/Chicago/Committeewoman." Small bit of oxidation on the right corner at the top but vast majority of luster remains Exc. Next item comes in original box by Dieges & Clust. Box corners are split. Holds fabric covered card with pinned on 3" tall ribbon badge. The brass suspension below features a radio microphone at the center surrounded by a wreath. Engraved initials at top "W.N.R.C." and engraved date below "1941." Few pinpoints of tarnish. The final item is from "1952 National Committee Democratic National Convention/Committeewoman." Enamel paint and brass with blue ribbon. Ribbon suspends a fob showing emblems of the city of "Chicago." Exc.
