Item Description
When the last link of the first Transcontinental Railroad was completed, a ceremony was held at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869 and the job was completed with a symbolic golden spike. The golden spike was then immediately removed and replaced with the last iron spike driven to complete the line. The single word "Done" was flashed by telegraph around the country and thus the event has come to be considered one of the first nationwide media events. During the 70th anniversary of the event in 1939 Director Cecil B. DeMille released his Union Pacific movie starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea. This item was used to promote that movie. It is 3" tall consisting of a wooden handle topped by a metal replica of a railroad hammer inscribed "1869 U.P. 1939." The reverse has a vertical 2" stickpin. Golden paint on the metal is about 75% complete. Rare and VF.
