Item Description
Issued in 1935 on cereal box backs and meant to be cut-out around their simulated frame border design. Seven are known in the series and all are included here. ACC #F272-66c. The true highlight of the set is Babe Didrikson, shown as a barnstorming basketballer. Babe Didrikson Zaharias is one of the truly legendary female athletes of any era. She achieved outstanding success as an athlete in golf, basketball and track and field. She won two gold medals and one silver medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. She had 43 wins with the LPGA tour. The other "actual" athletes are: Ellsworth Vines Jr. (tennis champion), Irving Jaffee (two-time gold Olympic Champion speed skater) and aviatrix Elinor Smith. Also includes sports theme pictures for Wheaties sponsored radio program characters Jack Armstrong (track) and two different for Betty Fairfield (golf, skiing). Four (including Babe) are neatly trimmed as intended, 6x6.5", and remain clean and Exc. Three others have additional "Wheaties" margin text panel at bottom that was actually meant to be trimmed, but that was not done. Two of these have margin wear w/some creases (Jack, Betty skiing) and are VG. Elinor is Exc. Rare as a set and the Babe on its own is much sought after.
