Item Description
Made in France. 1920s. 12.75x18x3.75" deep cardboard box has paste-on on lid w/"Ombro Cinema" text, which translates to Shadow Movie. Lid edges show wear and one side has .75" tear. Box contains beautifully designed and elaborate 11.5x16-7/8x2.25" paper-covered wood unit designed like movie theater stage. Left side of stage has graphics of man staring in awe at Charlie Chaplin on right side of stage, this being the only depiction of Chaplin on toy. Box is clean, tight and Fine. Inside of lid has label w/instructions and lists additional films available and has Paris store ink stamp. All text is French. Removable wood frame stage w/recessed area was designed to place paper rolls attached to wooden dowels w/built-in cranks that contain images in holders on back. Crank was then turned and images travel across black-lined thin plastic foreground, thus creating animated illusion. One corner of recessed back also contains wind-up music box for music to accompany film movement. Contains two paper rolls. One features racing motorcycles, horses, airplanes. Other has people running in rain, ships, trains, cowboys, Indians and much more. Stage has detached from frame and is Fine, but films and mechanism are VF. A wonderful early optical toy. The only other time we offered this rare toy it sold for $1,771.
