Item Description
3x5.5" silk w/small crease lines mostly on top 1/2" and some light widely scattered tan age marks. Only auction records we've found are two sales by Heritage Auctions. The first example missing the top line of text came from the Harris Collection in 2004 realizing $805.00. A second example in 2011 w/a Madison family connection, had full text but pieces missing top and bottom, and realized $3,346.00. Campaign items from Madison are nearly non-existent and while the Sullivan/Fischer in-depth reference on political ribbons does include memorial ribbons for early presidents, no Madison ribbons are cataloged. Text at ribbon top is dated for about two months after his death with the event titled "Honor To The Dead/August 25, 1836." Below is eagle with "Liberty" ribbon in its beak and below this is Madison's portrait in a large wreath. Text below reads "James Madison/Ex-President Of The United States/Born 17th March, 1750/Died 28th June, 1836." A rare and Fine ribbon worthy of all collections that attempt to include artifacts related to our earliest presidents.
