Item Description
Fascinating group based on the USA, African and European adventures of Theodore Roosevelt, six dated for his campaign year of 1912 and one undated, but somewhat earlier. Goldsmith did editorial, sports and comic strip cartoons for both the Boston Globe and Herald, these carry back stamps from the Herald. The first is undated but appears earlier than the other six. This has back stamp #1525 and is pencil titled on the top margin: "He Vanquishes A Bear." Reverse is lightly tanned w/many tiny age dots. Hairline tear 3.25" tall vertically near right divider of fifth panel w/clear tape on reverse. Front has dust on margins, a few pencil notations for publication and tack holes above and below art. The six panels remain very clean. The next three are all back stamped #1937 w/date stamp of May 1, 1912. These, in the order shown also have pencil notations of: "Tues AM, Thurs. AM, Saturday." These are titled "As President, He Discovers 'Peace Hath Its Victories.'" Scattered ink and pencil marks on reverse, tack holes on margins, a few front pencil notations for publication, six art panels are NM as created. Second in this series is titled "He Lands In Africa." Tack holes on margins, pencil notations for publication on front borders, five ink blotches but only one 1/8" dot in panel five and rest on margins. The six panels remain very clean. Third is titled "In Africa, He Finds Literature A Telling Weapon." Here he is presented w/an elephant by a stick figure African and TR paints "G.O.P." on the animal's side while typing his "Seventy-Fifth Story As I Ride About." He then meets "The Original Tammany Tiger." Third panel has 1.5" tear at bottom. Margin tack holes and pencil notations for publication, pair of .25" ink marks in panel three and one at far left. Overall Fine. The next three are back stamped #1823. All have date stamp "May 7, 1912" but no day of the week specified. These begin with "Oh Yes! The Smithsonian Collection Was Much Enriched By His Efforts In Africa." Some margin tack holes, pencil notations and eight ink blotches on margins. Last three panels have small dots of gray ink on lower areas but not very dark or distracting. Next is "He Was At Home In Any Country." This includes black porters, son Kermit and Italian reference to Nero and "Spaghet", Spanish bull fighters, Dutch beer, France and Napoleon and final English panel reads "Sorry I Can't Stay Any Longer John. I'm Going Home And Chuck This Hat Into The Ring."Small corner off lower right, a few tack holes and minor margin smudges. Art is NM, as created. Last is "He Visited The Crowned Heads Of Europe." Here he visits a king. He tries on the king's clothes and sits on the throne to the king's dismay. However, in final panel the king says "Oh! Such A Relief" as TR says "Yea, Your Throne Is Very Fine But Don't Worry I Know Of A Better One/And I'm Going Home To Grab It" as he holds up a picture of "Presidential Chair." A few tack holes and minor margin smudges. The six panels are NM as created. These seven original art strips represent a cartoon survey of roughly a decade in TR's life from c. early 1900s through his Nobel Prize award as President in 1904 and ending with his famous safari, concluding just before his 1912 run for the presidency as the Bull Moose candidate of the Progressive Party but referencing both his famous phrase "Hat In The Ring" and his goal of the "Presidential Chair." A wonderful series to frame individually or even as a large display. Comes with Hake's COA.
