Item Description
Lot of three 1.5" long brass and hard black leather-like viewing devices formed like miniature telescopes. Made in France as marked by tiny "France" text on viewing portal. c. 1908-1910. Stanhopes picture Wimbledon Women's Champions May Sutton, Charlotte Steery and Blanche Bingley. Sutton won the 1904 US Championships and won the 1905 and 1907 Wimbledon, becoming the first American to win the singles title at Wimbledon. She is depicted full body w/tennis racket in hand. Steery was a five-time Wimbledon Champion, winning in 1895, 1896, 1898, 1901 and 1908. She also won two Gold medals at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, in Singles (the first year women were allowed to participate) and Mixed Doubles. She is depicted from the waist up in a portrait. Bingley was a six-time Wimbledon Champion, winning in 1886, 1889, 1894, 1897, 1899 and 1900. She is depicted full body in Victorian dress w/racket in hand. Exc. All are rare and the first examples we've seen.
