York newspaper man Harry McLaughlin was a longtime Nixon friend and at the time of this letter, as it notes, was chairman of the York County Board of Parks And Recreation. The land came from Bob Hoffman, famous as a physical culture advocate and founder of the York Barbell Company, whose fame led to the York nickname "Muscletown USA." Hoffman met Nixon and in 1968 donated 152 acres of woodland to be a park named in honor of the newly elected president. McLaughlin in a January 7, 1969 letter informed Nixon of the donation but in this responding letter there is no mention by Nixon, and he seems unaware, the land was going to be named in his honor as the Richard Nixon Park. Nixon's letter dated March 5, 1969 on "The White House" stationery is addressed "Dear Harry" and reads in full: "The Great Mass Of Inaugural Mail Has Kept Me From Writing Until Now In Response To Your Letter Of January 7. I Just Want You To Know How Much I Appreciated Your Calling My Attention To The Donation Of 152 Acres Of Land By Bob Hoffman To York County. I know The Special Pleasure You Have Taken In Your Work With The Board Of Parks And Am Pleased That These New Acres Exemplify Both Your Great Political And Community Spirit. With Appreciation For Your Loyal Friendship Over The Years And With Warmest Personal Regards, Sincerely, Richard Nixon." Signed in blue ink. Faint 1/8" mark on extreme right of signature, Very minor.
