Item Description
The Blizzard of 1888 hit the northeastern US w/an unrelenting fury of heavy snows, bitter cold, and high winds that pounded the region from Washington, DC, to the Canadian border in a storm that lasted for three days in mid-March. The storm took people by surprise, and snow was measured in CT. between 20" and 50", but high winds caused snowdrifts up to 20 feet in several areas. In one 24-hour period, 31" of snow fell in New Haven, CT. w/45" total by storm's end. Railroad service was halted, businesses had to shut down, and citizens of the state were imprisoned in their homes while the storm raged. It took days for many to dig themselves out. Over 400 people across the East Coast died in the storm, and damage was estimated at $20 million. 8x9-7/8" oversized cabinet photo shows the result of the storm's fury in Bridgeport, CT. w/a group of children standing on large piles of snow in the street. Men are seen beside "Main Street" trolley from the Bridgeport Railroad. Large "Children Cry For Pitcher's Castoria" and "Castoria" signs painted on fences are also seen. Card has various pencil and ink notations on reverse. Photo is evenly aged w/some tiny age spots and cabinet mounting has some edge wear, though this does not detract from photo's appearance, which remains VF.
