Item Description
Very striking design 12x12x5" deep. Reverse has two vertical steel bars, like picture frame easels, mounted on an angle so the unit sits slanted back to project the heat upward. Also on the reverse is rectangular 4.75x9.25" steel cover over the interior compartment that held the heating element (no longer present). The front of the piece w/Mickey Mouse against gold-colored bkg. is all cast-iron except for Art Deco-styled wire grill over the heater opening. The wire has at far left and right a pair of hook-shaped bends that once attached to some interior fastener (now missing) to keep the grill centered in the opening. Two foam wedges have been inserted in the interior, not visible from the front or most viewing angles, to hold the grill in the correct position. On the reverse is the maker's small metal plate reading "Tabard Mickey Mouse Fire - By Permission of Walt Disney - Mickey Mouse Ltd." The plate also has an apparent serial number consisting of small stamped numerals "240/250." c. 1935. The reverse heating element compartment has an all-over lt. layer of surface rust and the cast-iron reverse of Mickey's feet has similar brown surface oxidation, a natural occurrence as the metal back was never painted. Front of the piece has small traces of paint rubs mostly on the highest relief areas of Mickey's gloves and shoes. The paint remains very attractive and VF overall. Of special note are Mickey's large black oval eyes which are deeply recessed but accented by high relief pie-cut accents for a visual three-dimensional effect. This is an impressive display piece w/sculptural qualities. Mickey's head and arms are .25" to 3/8" in relief, his gloved hands are raised as much as .5" and his shoes at the toe end are a full 2" deep. One of the very few cast-iron Mickey objects ever produced, one other being the iconic 1930s French Mickey Mouse cast-iron bank. While this piece is not fully three-dimensional like the bank, it is both taller and over twice as wide. The company is known to have produced even larger units and wall units as well. About eight of this model are known to exist within the Disneyana collecting world but this is the only example we've been able to offer in our 47 years.
