Item Description
First reads “Support Self Determination/Vote Socialist Workers 1970.” 14.5x22”. Issued by San Francisco office. Left margin a little darker than right and small tonal difference on top two corners. The Indian in sunglasses may be based on photos of Russell Means of the Oglala Sioux who was the first national director of American Indian Movement, seized the Mayflower II ship replica at Plymouth, Mass. on Thanksgiving Day, was prominent in standoff with government at Wounded Knee in 1973 and in 1987 announced his candidacy for President for the Libertarian Party nomination (losing to Ron Paul). The second poster was issued by East Greenwich Village group E.V.O.K.E. to rally people for a D.C. protest July 15, 1978 concluding “The Longest Walk.” The poster is 11x17” with light tanning mostly on left margin. Dennis Banks, one of the co-founders of the American Indian Movement, discovered a new cause: Pending federal legislation was proposed that would damage treaty rights of American Indian tribes across the country. At hand were 11 bills before Congress that would have restricted tribal government, limited some hunting and fishing rights and closed Native schools and hospitals. Banks led the Longest Walk across America to bring attention to the 11 bills before Congress as referenced on this poster. Those who followed Banks became known as Long Walkers. From the Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
