Item Description
7/8" button without maker name or back paper. Pictures and reads "For Governor J.C.W. Beckham." Design is a little off center to the right but clean and displays Mint. This button is from his 1903 re-election campaign which he won. However the fascinating part occurred four years earlier. He was the Lieut. Gov. running mate of the Democrat William Goebel who was running for Governor. Beckham was on the ticket in spite of the fact that he was not of legal age to serve as Governor. Goebel lost the election to Republican William Taylor but the Kentucky General Assembly disputed the results. During the following wrangling an unknown assassin shot Goebel. A day later the General Assembly invalidated enough votes to give the election to Goebel who was sworn into office on his deathbed. The Republican Taylor claimed the election had been stolen by the Democratic majority and a legal fight ensued between him and Beckham with Beckham ultimately winning the office.
