Robinson became UCLA's first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports - baseball, basketball, football, and track. He was one of four black players on the 1939 UCLA Bruins football team; the others were pioneering African American film actor Woody Strode (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe award for his role in "Spartacus" in 1960), Kenny Washington, and Ray Bartlett. At a time when only a handful of African American players existed in mainstream college football, this made UCLA college football's most integrated team. Strode and Washington (the first African-American to sign w/the NFL) were two of the first African-Americans to play in major college programs and later the modern NFL, playing for the Los Angeles Rams in 1946.
