Item Description
The Indian Head gold pieces were two coins, identical in design, struck by the US Mint - a $2-1/2 coin, or Quarter Eagle (see item #777-778), and a $5 coin, or Half Eagle - designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The Quarter Eagle was struck 1908-1915, and then again in 1925–1929, and the Half Eagle from 1908 to 1916, and then again in 1929. These two coins are unique in US coinage due to the design and inscriptions being stamped in incuse, rather than being raised from the surface, meaning that the flat surfaces are the highest points of the coin. The coins were the final ones for these denominations as coins struck for circulation, ending series which had begun in the 1790s. The composition, weight, and diameter of the coin remained unchanged from previous designs, but both the obverse and reverse were drastically altered. The obverse depicts an Indian head wearing a feathered war bonnet headdress. The reverse depicts an eagle standing on a bundle of arrows w/an olive branch at its feet w/the inscriptions "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust." Production of the Half Eagle was suspended during World War I and not resumed until 1929, the final year of issue. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
