Auction #209 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1144 in auction 209
Item Description
Sizes range from 7/8" cello on a stickpin to large brass luster white metal piece 2.5" in dia. This has what seems to be an original ribbon looped through the die-cut letters which spell out "Dewey Hero Manila." Reverse of this has metal prong to be bent back so the piece can stand up. Only example we've seen with brass luster. Usually these are a black coloration. Some tan on the ribbon but the piece itself is Exc. Also included is brass medal with his portrait on front and reverse showing his ship with text "Visit U.S. Navy 1899." First we've seen. Second in bronze color has his portrait while reverse has G.A.R. image of ribbon badge issued for 33rd National Encampment 1899 Philadelphia. Next are two double-sided celluloid pieces. These have flag and portrait fronts with the name "Dewey." Each one has identical reverse and text "Adm'l Dewey's Flagship/U.S. Cruiser Olympia." Each has a loop and probably hung from a ribbon badge. Next is ribbon badge with ribbon text "Reception Admiral Dewey" dated for 1899 event in New York. Suspended white medal shows him and Schley. This has reverse quotations "You Can Commence Firing As Soon As You Are Ready" and "There Is Glory Enough For All." Last is 1.75" portrait celluloid with no fastener and probably once suspended from a ribbon. Lot also includes the "Welcome Admiral Dewey" color portrait celluloid on a stickpin. Items are Exc. to NM.
