Item Description
24x43.25" poster has main poster image added and shows a vigilant eagle flying over the seas, spotting the periscope of a German U-boat w/steaming ship in bkg. Poster artist is noted as B. Audsley and text at bottom notes "This Poster Is Based On A Picture By The Japanese Artist Hiroshige." Top of poster reads "American War Posters" and bottom gives Aug. 21 to Sept. 30, 1917 date for exhibition of US war posters at the Free Public Library of Newark, NJ. and was sponsored by the "Committee On Public Information" of Washington DC and bears their seal at bottom center. Interesting as this exhibition took place during our involvement in World War I (April 6, 1917-Nov. 11, 1918). Poster been linen-mounted, an early example of this mounting. Back of poster has ink stamp of "Wetener & Wild - Map Mounters" as well as ink stamp noting this poster as a gift given in 1937. Poster shows moderate wear w/heavy dust soiling at top and is VG overall.
