Item Description
Rarely do we get to offer a Tom Mix premium as special as this. It is the only example known to us and was almost certainly a prototype produced by Robbins Co. of Attleboro, Mass. although it does not carry their name likely because of its creation of a potential premium never issued. The piece is 1.75" wide with lower panel having a checkerboard border around six center panels each having an emblem of a cattle brand. Tiny luster loss on the far left brand which is an "H" within a circle and the far right brand which is a steer head. Well over 90% of the piece has original bright luster. At the top is a die-cut portrait of Tom identical to that appearing on "Wrangler" badge in our previous lot. It is likely this design was considered for the 1938 premium but in the end they stayed with the design from earlier years which incorporated the foil Ralston logo. This item came into the hobby and the hands of our consignor in the 1970s when a small group of proofs and prototypes were sold having originated from an employee of the Robbins Co. A true Tom Mix premium rarity and as we mentioned, very likely unique. Also see Tom Mix probable prototype rings #1343-1344.
