Item Description
This is an elaborate and beautifully constructed premium with 1.5x2.5" deep golden luster metal top with extensive embossed text along with illustrations of a pair of telescopes and anchors. A ribbon design across the top carries the title "Jack Armstrong Heliograph And Distance Finder." Beneath are a series of lines giving various "Mariner's Measure" for example "6 FT = 1 Fathom" followed by three additional lines beneath the text "Land Measure" for example "12 IN = 1FT." Across the top front of the piece are four rectangular narrow compartments of various lengths. These have captions referencing fractions of a mile and were used for estimating distance. The interior of the piece is hollow to serve as a secret compartment but it also includes a blue spring piece of steel that can be pressed to produce clicking sounds for Morse code usage. The back cover of the piece has a metal panel in silver luster with the interior serving as a signaling mirror and with the exterior providing the Morse code chart "A" through "Z." The entire premium is in gorgeous Mint condition. It comes with folded original instructions signed by "Jack Armstrong." In addition is a blank small paper envelope with tears at the end flap and a second piece of paper showing a star chart on one side with a glue stained reverse on the other side promoting this piece as a premium to "Boys! Girls!" and naming the sponsor as Bisquick plus address for General Mills in Minnesota and a mailing expiration date of July 25, 1938. This piece was used as a test premium by the company and extremely few were distributed. In Hake's Pop Culture Memorabilia guide the NM value is $1750.00. We think that valuation is accurate although item begins with a much more conservative opening bid.
