Item Description
Solid bronze, 73 lb. statue stands on nice quality marble base, total height is 30" tall. Commissioned in 1976 by the publisher of DC Comics to coincide w/the United States' Bicentennial, this is one of just two statue sculpted by William Crawford (1913-1982). Crawford, an award-winning editorial cartoonist and talented sculptor, served as President of the National Cartoonists Society in 1961 and 1962, and was the chief cartoonist of the Newark Evening News from 1938 to 1961 before becoming the chief editorial cartoonist of Newspaper Enterprise Association through the 1960s and 1970s. Later turning his considerable talents to sculpture, Crawford created two of these statues for DC Comics, one of which has stood in their lobby for decades. This is the sister piece to that very statue, which has been seen by the many visitors to the DC offices over the years. This very statue is featured in Harry Matetsky's invaluable "The Adventures Of Superman Collecting" book on pages 188-190. There is a brass name plaque on the front of the marble base which reads, "1976 Bicenn. - "Superman" Bronze #1 - Artist William Crawford." Statue captures an iconic image of the Man of Steel, w/his hands on his hips, a pose so often seen throughout the 75 years of Superman's history. As sculpted, Crawford has perfectly captured the essence of Superman's power and nobility. An outstanding artistic achievement and a unique collectible for any Superman fan. Exc. Extremely rare and of the utmost quality, this is the only example of this statue that has ever been made available to the public, as the other example remains in the offices of DC Comics.
