10x12.5” c. 1900 edition published by Cassell & Co. New York, London, and Paris. Embossed front cover has angel holding sword and spear. Title page has text “Limited”. High quality w/gilt edge pages includes 62 page preface on life of John Milton and 328 numbered pages plus 49 detailed full page engravings by Dore. Book is an epic poem in blank verse by 17th-century English poet John Milton (1608-1674). It was originally published in 1667. The poem tells the Bible story of the fall of man, the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Covers have corner and spine tip wear, w/lt. scuff on back cover. Fine. One inside page has piece gone from corner, pages otherwise Fine/VF. Superb art throughout by Dore (1832-1883), a major influence on every illustrator of the last 140 years.
