Item numbers 1 through 1270 in auction 210
Item Description
24.5x29 frame contains original pastel art of Washington Redskins HOF quarterback Sonny Jurgensen that has been matted to 14x21". Art is by Nicholas Volpe (1911-1992) who was commissioned in 1965 by Union Oil to provide art for a set of 12 plastic tumbler glasses that were to be sold at gas stations all across the country. Art has been signed by Volpe w/"'65" date added at lower right corner. This art was used on several NFL items - including the 5.75" tall insulated plastic tumbler offered here. Volpe's career took off after he began painting portraits of Hollywood stars. After winning a Golden Grammy for a Sinatra album cover, he was commissioned by Hollywood's Brown Derby to paint nearly 200 top recording artists for the Derby's Hall of Fame Record Room. Art has "The Redskins - 1965" team logo paste-over at upper left and large Sonny Jurgensen signature at bottom center. Art features great double image of Jurgensen portrait w/game scene of him about to snap ball. Jurgensen is depicted in color while other players are in bw, making him stand out. Great display piece and matted in Redskins burgundy. "Sonny Jurgensen" brass name plate at bottom. Ready for display. Exc. Tumbler has some lt. wear w/sticker residue on underside but is o/w VF and comes along.
