Item Description
Eight sided tapering cane 32" long and .75" dia. at the top. Top end has 5/8" deep hole where a handle was anchored. Bottom tip is 1-1/8" tall, appearing to be tarnished brass. The shaft is covered top to bottom in black lettering covered by tan shellac. Thin black lines around the circumference divided the shaft into panels 6.5" long at the top and 3.5 to 4.5" long down the shaft. Except for the top 3", the lettering consists of two phrases in Latin and the remaining lettering appears to be in Hebrew, Arabic and other languages we can not identify. At the top on each of eight sides is the text beginning, probably, with the makers name followed by month and year. Text in parenthesis is clarification and not on the item. Side one: "John B. (rest unclear) Wadleigh-Bart Sacra (two or more Latin words unclear)." Side two: "CAL IV (perhaps meaning April) MDCCCXXXVIII" (1838) followed by apparent Hebrew lettering. Side three: "AN (apparently)INDEP AMERICANAE LXII." Side four: "MARTIN VAN BUREN. PRAESES. U.S." Side five: "R (partial letter) M. JOHNSON. V. PRAESES." Side six: "E (partial letter) DWARD EVERETT. GUB.-". Side seven: "MASSACHUSETTS." Side eight: "* U.S.A. *." Unique. VF. Julie Powell Collection.
