Item Description
3x4.75x.25" thick red enamel on brass pop-open case to hold 12 cigarettes. White simulated handwriting on the lid "I Swiped This From/Harry S. Truman." Comes with folded 5x8.25" stationery, with clipped upper corner, "The White House/Washington." Hand written is: "Actually Given To Cabinet Members/By President Truman./Louis A. Johnson/Sec. Of Defense." Apparently the was Johnson's at one time. He was Truman's chief fund raiser in 1948 and the money he acquired was crucial in Truman's come from behind victory. He became the second Secretary Of Defense (previously called Secretary Of War) and served in Truman's cabinet May 28, 1949-Sept. 19, 1950. Trivial surface wear in reflected light. Exc. Rare. A great Truman item.
