Item numbers 1 through 1270 in auction 210
Item Description
Ike's letter on "The White House" stationary 7x9" slightly trimmed is dated May 21, 1954. Front is clean but has lighter color margin around slightly darker tone interior area. Reverse has handling smudges and eight small pieces of tan paper tape from a previous mounting in a matte which created the tonal variation on the front. Letter would matte to Mint appearance. Letter is addressed to "Mr. James S. Copley, The Copley Press, Inc./Aurora, Illinois." Text in full reads "Thank You For Your Recent Two Letters. While I Am Always A Bit Astonished To Find Someone Who Really Wants A Reproduction Of The "Portrait" I Did Of Lincoln, I Have None The Less Asked That A Copy Of It Be Sent To You Today. Please Tell Mrs. Copley That I Shall Hope To Meet Her At Some Future Time. With Warm Regards, Sincerely" with 3.25" long signature. Comes with 13x17" stiff sheet with mounted as issued 9.25x12" print of Ike's painting. Ike's initials as the artist appear in lower right corner. From previous framing top edge of board has .25" line of surface paper loss and reverse has 5.5" line of brown paper. The surface paper loss barely shows and would easily be matted out. Printed caption at bottom left is "President Abraham Lincoln/From A Photograph/By Alexander Gardner/Taken November 15, 1863." Printed at right is "By Dwight D. Eisenhower/Christmas 1953." Below in 1.25x7" area Ike wrote: "For: James S. Copley/With Warm Personal Regard/Dwight D. Eisenhower." Inscription is lightly faded but still strong and totally clear. Card reverse has trademark of "Hallmark" and text "This Edition Is Limited To 850 Copies." A rarely offered limited edition of an oversize Presidential Christmas card not only inscribed by the in office Presidential artist, but also with signed cover letter. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA-LOA for each piece.
