Classic image has The Duke in western outfit clutching smoking pistol in left hand and holding arm w/bloody hand. A bullet has just whizzed through his hat as steers stampede in flaming background. Upper left has monochrome original art w/Wayne in cowboy hat and text at top “The Greatest Cowboy Star Of Them All!” Art is signed “Walt” at lower left w/”6 D” price at lower right. Blank margins have dust soil and editorial notes, image area has faint moisture mark at upper left which blends well w/background. Image area will frame to Exc. appearance. Well worn comic with totally different cover and contents than the US printing by Toby Press just comes along. The “Death On Wheels” story appeared in Toby issue # 23 Nov. 1953. Howarth (1928-2008) had his first professional sale in 1946, and became the main cover artist for World Distributors w/comic book and annual covers including The Avengers, James Bond, The Munsters, Tarzan, and Doctor Who. Superb design and detail, impressive size. The nicest Howarth original we’ve ever seen.
