Item Description
17x22" glossy paper poster has caricatured images of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hideki Tojo, who are shown w/hypodermic needles filled w/sexually-transmitted diseases, ready to give shots to soldiers. Each of them features symptoms of the disease on their bodies. Poster text reads "Fool The Axis - Use Prophylaxis - Prophylaxis Prevents Venereal Disease!" Each wears a sash reading - "Gonorrhea" (Mussolini), "Chancriod" (Tojo) and "Syphilis" (Hitler). Mussolini's needle is disguised as a scantily-clad woman w/skull and crossbones above her crotch area. During World War II, the medical corps had a prophylaxis kit that would sometimes be issued to soldiers going into town. Upon the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, Arthur Szyk began producing anti-axis political art and eventually moved to New York City. During the war he created numerous covers for "Collier's" magazine. His efforts didn't go unnoticed as Hitler put a price tag on Szyk's head. The American press called Szyk a "one-man army against fascism." Poster is mounted to thin cardboard and has one vertical and two horizontal folds. 1.5" tear at bottom margin fold line. Pinholes at corners and at margins, each w/corresponding .25x.25" tear, none of which affect the illustration or text. Printed in 1942 by John Wyeth & Brother, Inc. of Philadelphia, PA. as noted by small text at bottom. Two 1/8x1" areas of ink scribbles above Tojo's hat. Aged masking tape at borders of poster could be removed or would easily mat out for poster display. Good. Rare and desirable World War II poster. First we've offered in our 47 years.
