Item Description
17.25x22.75" frame contains matted photo print of Stewart in his Army uniform. Additional photo image of Sgt. Richard P. Pentz, who preserved the included document, an 8x10.25" double-sided (professionally matted and framed under double-sided glass so both side are visible) "Officer's Classification Questionnaire" that has been filled out in black ink in Stewart's hand. This questionnaire lists all of Stewart's personal details including listing his rank and commission date. Stewart notes his previous employment w/"Metro Goldwyn Mayer" as an actor and lists his qualifications as a pilot. Stewart applied for an Army Air Corps commission and pilot rating though he was almost six years beyond the maximum age for aviation cadet training. Stewart received his commission as a second lieutenant in Jan. 1942, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He also received a pilot rating. Stewart desired assignment to an operational unit rather than serve as a recruiting symbol. He applied for and was granted advanced training in multi-engine aircraft. Stewart was posted to nearby Mather Field to instruct in both single and twin-engine aircraft. He was promoted to first lieutenant on July 7, 1942 and was stationed from Aug.-Dec. 1942 at Kirtland Army Airfield in Albuquerque, NM, piloting AT-ll Kansans used in training bombardiers. This questionnaire has Albuquerque, NM station inked in at top of front. Sheet is lightly aged, but as framed, displays Exc. Interesting World War II item concerning one of Hollywood's biggest stars' contribution to the war effort. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
