Item Description
2.5" tall two-piece white metal badge pinned to rwb ribbon. Top has design of eagle, crossed rifles, cannon and star. Suspended below are flags flanking a shield with Liberty head at center and surround text "Soldiers & Sailors Reunion Milwaukee Jun 1890." Nice traces of original silver luster remaining. While the GAR began in the 1860s there was a very dormant period through the 1870s. This event, in June of 1880, became the scene for what many observers have judged to be the rebirth of the GAR as a National organization. 40,000 veterans with wives and children converged on Milwaukee for the event which opened June 7. Generals Grant and Sheridan arrived by special train and were guests of honor. Wisconsin's famed war eagle "Old Abe" was there for what would prove to be his last parade. This is a very historic badge in the history of the GAR. Extremely Fine.
