Auction #210 - Part II
Item numbers 1271 through 3109 in auction 210
Item Description
13" tall toy (measuring to top of separate celluloid umbrella top and counting wooden base) is all celluloid w/exception of metal bell accents. Toy depicts full figure of Mickey Mouse standing beside simulated clock (w/fake front) that has celluloid-covered metal rod which celluloid umbrella top w/dangling celluloid balls dangle from. This rod holds another celluloid figure w/face painted like Betty Boop. When built-in key on back is wound, this elaborate toy's umbrella top spins and Betty figure turns on pole as bells ring and clock hands revolve. Back is stamped "Made In Japan." 1930s. Toy has lt. aging but remains free of any cracks/dents and is o/w Exc. Umbrella top is a vintage replacement most likely from a smaller wind-up toy with a similar revolving umbrella style top. The original umbrella had a slightly larger diameter and had six threads with three dangling balls on each thread. The original also had a hollow straw type tube attached to it that slipped over the metal rod as opposed to this one having a crimp type attachment to attach to the rod, thus making this toy about a inch taller than the original. That said this replacement does not detract much from this rare toys whimsical design.
