Auction #210 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1270 in auction 210
Item Description
1.75x2.25" Cuban card issued as a premium by La Moda brand cigars. Same exact card was also issued by Billiken brand cigars and as scarce as those are, the La Moda variants are even rarer (as evidenced by the fact that there were no examples in the Richard Merkin collection). There are only approximately 40 La Moda cards known to exist and no more than one example has been found of any individual player. Cards in this set feature players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. The set includes 15 cards each for the four teams that participated that season: Almendares, Habana, Marianao, Santa Clara. Glossy front features a bw photo, player's name and team "Currie, S. Clara B.B.C." Back of the card has an ad for "La Moda". Currie was one of the top Negro League pitchers of the 1920's starring for championship teams, the Hilldale Daisies & the Kansas City Monarchs. Card has a margin trim but remains clean, front is glossy w/strong and crisp image. In our March 2012 auction we sold the Billiken variant of this card in SGC 40 VG 3 for $1,472.
