Item Description
20x26" Crescent illustration board has noted psychedelic poster artist Rick Griffin's original pen and ink & airbrushed art. The stunning original art is around a paste-on album cover proof for “Wake Of The Flood”, for which Griffin also did the art. For The Grateful Dead's sixth studio album, "Wake Of The Flood" which was originally released on Oct. 15, 1973. It was the first release under the band's own label, Grateful Dead Records, after fulfilling their contract w/Warner Bros. Records. It was the first studio album w/o Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who had recently died. This cover proof has been incorporated into the center of the original artwork that shows a large crow perched in a tree, the album clutched in its talons. This was created by Griffin who hand-cut the cover proof so that the art that would have been covered now has the appearance of being held in the crow's claws. This crow motif is a continuation of what appears on the back cover of the album. Additionally, art has visible lines from Griffin's airbrushing mask used during the airbrushing process. Text at top reads "All New Stuff" and originally featured an exclamation mark, and although this was not used on the printed piece, it remains partially visible on the original art. Griffin has signed art at lower right and art comes matted. NM. Amazing Rick Griffin art, a must-have for fans of the artist and The Grateful Dead.
