Item Description
20x25.25" artboard has 18.75x24" sheet of paper stapled to it w/great pencil and marker original art by Anthony Leonardi showing preliminary design for one-sheet movie poster for 1974 neo-noir gangster film directed by Sydney Pollack about a man who returns to Japan after several years away in order to rescue his friend's kidnapped daughter. This design features a central vertical image bordered by pair of hands holding large katana samurai swords w/images of men and woman at center, some holding guns, some holding swords. Asian design influences can be seen at top. Leonardi (1932-2004) was known for his "Dutch Boy" paint ads, which used his son as the model. Later, he did movie and theater poster design work and was a member of the Society of Illustrators. His design for the poster was altered slightly for the finished product, but the basic layout remained. A hand holds a sword hilt along bottom, the blade having "Yakuza" in large red marker letters. This area has glue staining from attachment that is no longer present. Sheet has some minor handling wear and scattered dust soiling to margins, but if matted and framed, would display VF.
