Item Description
14x21" paper poster advertising the "Christmas Number" issue of "St. Nicholas Magazine," a popular American children's magazine founded in 1873. The magazine published work by the country's best writers, including Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Mark Twain and Joel Chandler Harris. Many famous writers were first published in St. Nicholas League, a department that offered awards and cash prizes to the best work submitted by its juvenile readers; Edna St. Vincent Millay, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E.B. White, and Stephen Vincent Benet all being winners. St. Nicholas Magazine ceased publication in 1940. A revival was attempted in 1943, but only a few issues were published. This poster dates to the early 1900s and features an absolutely wonderful image of a pipe-smoking Santa Claus speeding down a snowy hill in an early automobile, which is packed w/Christmas trees, toys and issues of St. Nicholas. Poster has corner tip wear to upper right, w/.5" tip off and archival tape repair to 1" piece. Margins have pinholes but these could be easily matted out for a VF display.
