Item numbers 1 through 1196 in auction 211
Item Description
Two 7.25x9.5" letters on "Supreme Court Of The United States/Washington, D.C. 20543" embossed stationery. Each with single center fold for mailing. Lot includes corresponding envelopes. First is dated August 14, 1970. Chief Justice Berger declines McLaughlin's invitation "To Speak At The 41st Annual Convention Of The York-Adams Scholastic Press Association On Monday, October 19, At York, Pennsylvania." Second letter dated October 6, 1970 is in response to McLaughlin's "Letter Of October 2 Advising The Change Of Date Of The Annual Convention Of The York-Adams Press Association From Monday, October 19 to Monday, November 23rd. While There Are No Arguments That Day, A Session Of The Court Is Scheduled, And Of Course I Must Remain In Washington. As To Your Suggestion That I Speak That Same Day To A Group Central Pennsylvania Lawyers And Guests At A Luncheon To Raise Funds For Steve Burger's Rescue Mission I Must Advise You That Under The ABA Canons Of Ethics It Is Inappropriate For A Judge To Participate In Any Activity Connected With Fund Raising. I Wish Him Success In This Worthwhile Project." Tiny trace of handling wear. VF. From the Harry McLaughlin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA and 2 JSA COAs.
