Item Description
6x8.5" First Edition published in the US by Alfred A. Knopf in 1964. Novel was written by Kobo Abe (1924–1993), a Japanese writer and playwrigh often compared to Franz Kafka and Alberto Moravia for his surreal, often nightmarish explorations of individuals in contemporary society and his modernist sensibilities. The book deals w/a schoolteacher becoming trapped in the dunes w/a woman, forced to fight the constant advance of sand. Illustrations by Machi Abé. The novel was adapted in 1964 into a Japanese film directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara starring Eiji Okada and Kyoko Kishida. It received positive critical reviews and was nominated for two Academy Awards. The screenplay for the film was adapted by Abe. Comes w/original dust jacket, which is free of any clips. DJ shows some lt. margin wear but is complete and VF. Book itself is clean and in choice, Exc. condition. Comes w/2.75x5" review slip that reads "This Book Is Sent To You With The Compliments Of Your Random House Representative." NM.
