Item Description
This is the only 3-dimensional figural campaign item we can recall which features ferrotype portraits. The drum stands 9/16" tall and has a diameter across the drum heads of .75". On one side edge is a small hook shaped brass loop. This item is listed as Hake #3184 and our photo of that example shows a small ring fastened to the loop but otherwise we don't know what this piece would have been suspended from. The side panel of the drum is embossed brass and features a repeating design of tension wires. Each drum head is a ferrotype held in position by four tiny brass tabs. The Harrison ferrotype has a very shallow hairline crease to the right of his image but the crease was enough to cause some of the upper layer of gray emulsion to flake off leaving a black streak. Other than a couple of dots off his beard his image is totally complete and clear. The Reid ferrotype is near perfect. This most unusual item, pretty much the last campaign in which ferrotype images saw use, has a Hake 2004 guide value of $700.00. The piece is very rarely offered.
