Item Description
President Theodore Roosevelt was present at the dedication of the monument at Antietam honoring New Jersey soldiers who fought in the famous Civil War battle. The figure atop this tall monument which towers over the countryside represents Capt. Hugh C. Irish, the first to fall September 17, 1862. Both the 1862 battle date and the 1903 monument dedication date are noted in celluloid on the reverse of this piece. The suspension is 2-1/8" and with its flag ribbon and "Souvenir" celluloid and brass bar pin the piece measures 5.5" tall. The front of the celluloid suspension has real photos of both Roosevelt and Governor Franklin Murphy who later became a Vice Presidential hopeful in 1908. Flag ribbon has tiny streak of color fade at upper right but there are no tears or stains. Reverse includes its W&H paper label. The celluloid suspension is NM displaying Mint. An exceptionally rare single day ribbon badge. Julie Powell Collection.
