Item Description
1.5" extremely unusual and rare campaign novelty similar to a celluloid button but the collet on the underside holds additional celluloid with a window at the center displaying sand. Curl carries name of maker American Artworks, Coshocton, O. The text on each side explains the item and we begin with the front reading "C.W. Gillam/Candidate For State Senator/Jackson And Cottonwood Counties/Republican Ticket, 1910/The Only Man Who Has Sand To State His Platform/This Lucky Piece Contains Sand Taken With-/Out Permission From The Beach At Oyster/Bay, The Home Of The Premier Exponent Of The 'Square Deal' Of These United/States, And A Fighter For Right And/Justice, Who, Whether He Wins/Or Loses A Battle, Is Never/A Quitter." On the reverse top slogan reads "You Can't Fight To Win Unless/You've Got Sand." Text below reads "Tradition Says There Is Luck/As Well As Grit In The Sands Of The Sea." Front celluloid has the very slightest hint of barely visible tan age mixed among the lines of type and barely showing. On the side displaying the sand a tiny sliver of the celluloid covering did not tuck under the collet along the right edge. There is a near hairline gap .25" long of little consequence as it does not allow any of the enclosed sand to escape. VF. Only example known to us.
