Item Description
This piece is a front page cartoon from a 1912 newspaper which has been turned into a 9x9" celluloid covered metal "sign" with a cord hanger on the reverse. Cardboard back has penciling of the original owner which includes the town of Mount Alto, Pa. Minor bit of surface paper off the reverse. Light oxidation around the metal frame on the reverse but it causes no problems and the front displays evenly tanned and with full gloss. Masthead names the newspaper "North American/Philadelphia, Wednesday, August 14, 1912." Illustration and apparently the verse are by "Edward Morrissey" whose name appears at the bottom of the verse. Uncle Sam stands pondering the three animals under consideration. The cartoon is titled "Uncle Sam Hitchin' Up." The verse both begins and ends with four lines of text which we will quote at the end. The text for the first animal to be considered, the elephant, has eight lines of text with the final two reading "But He's Got So Mean An' Ornery He Ain't A Bit Of Use, So I'll Have To Hitch The Donkey-Or The Old Bull Moose." The donkey is then considered with an additional eight lines of text with the last two reading "No, I Never Knew A Donkey, Any Donkey To Produce-So I Better Be A-Squintin' At The Old Bull Moose." The moose gets eight lines of text with the last two reading "Oh He Wasn't Very Showy, But He Got There Fresh An' Spruce-For I Never Saw A Puller Like The Old Bull Moose." The panel concludes with the same four lines it began with reading "It's A Darn Important Journey, An' I'm Calculatin' Which Of The Critters In My Stable It 'Ud Be The Best To Hitch; But He's Got To Do Some Haulin', For I'm Loaded Like The Duece-So I Guess I'll Put The Harness On The Old Bull Moose." A few very trivial age traces. No stain. Likely a unique piece made by someone who wanted to save this Progressive Party favorable cartoon and had the technical access to equipment to turn it into a display. A modest opening.
